Best Azerite Traits for Discipline Priest

Based on simulations, logs, and analysis we have selected the best Discipline Priest Azerite Traits, which should generally be prioritized. Keep in mind that the strength of Azerite Traits is based on the source item's item level, which can weight their value. This scaling will typically make a higher item level piece of gear better, even if it has less ideal traits.

Azerite Effect Tier List

Note: This offers an approximate ranking or tier list of available azerite effects based off of testing and analysis from Beta and Live before the release of Ny'alotha. Damage dealing Azerite pieces do not proc Atonement and therefore are not ranked in this tier list as a result. Updated for Patch 8.3.

Ring 1 - Outer Ring
  • Enduring Luminescence — Ideal Azerite build will have 1x Enduring Luminescence for the extended duration. Note: the Heal effect stacks but not the + duration.
  • Depth of the Shadows — Additional Atonement duration to all Shadow Mend casts, as well as a buff to the healing quantity make this a valuable trait to have one of. Also an ideal azerite trait to have at least one of one the outer ring.
  • Death Throes — Primary "stackable" trait for raid and mythic+. This shadow trait works with Discipline and offers a significant increase in Shadow Word: Pain or Purge damage, which is often one of our top Atonement heals. This trait versus Heart of Darkness will depend on whether more damage or more healing is needed. Incredibly powerful on the many multi-dot friendly encounters that Ny'alotha has, but on single target Heart of Darkness will likely be better HPS.
  • Heart of Darkness — This is the new raid trait from Ny'alotha. While it has a corruption requirement, that threshold is often low enough to make this an easy requirement. The additional stats are incredibly powerful and will be one of the best Azerite Traits at our disposal. It will compete with Death Throes.
  • Loyal to the End — This trait requires other members of the raid to also have the trait to reach maximum efficacy and when players with this trait die, all other members with the trait receive additional secondary stat boosts for 15 seconds. This trait is still incredibly powerful even though it is only available on Eternal Palace azerite. Expect to run these for awhile in early progression unless it receives some big nerfs.
  • Meticulous Scheming — Buff that offers a short window to active a lengthy haste proc for 20 seconds.
  • Blood Rite — While unlikely to extend the duration consistently in raid fights, can offer a solid haste proc to a haste hungry spec and good power in 5mans.
  • Swirling Sands — Solid critical strike increase with an opportunity to extend the duration.
  • Blightborne Infusion — Solid secondary stat increase.
  • Sudden Revelation — Replaces Gift of Forgiveness in Patch 8.1, offers small cooldown reduction to Power Word: Radiance. Stacking multiple traits DOES NOT increase the cooldown reduction but when you use Power Word: Radiance and receive the buff from this trait you can hold multiple charges of the buff at a time. Decent for raid, very powerful for Mythic+ where you can use this buff to great effect on trash mobs to maximize your damage.
  • Arcane Heart — New raid trait from the Eternal Palace and World Bosses. After the recent nerf to the uptime (not being able to accumulate progress while the buff is up) this uptime is significantly impacted for healers in this burst healing environment of EP.
  • Weal and Woe — Rewards frequent Penance usage either offensively or defensively, but due to the spell's low value this trait is less valuable.
  • Unstable Catalyst — Solid Primary stat increase with an often disruptive positional requirement.
  • Moment of Repose — Holds a very high scaling level, but overall too underpowered to see strong use.
Ring 2 - Middle Ring
  • Synergistic Growth — Solid mastery with excellent control over the proc. Allows you to further empower a strong ramp up and will have very strong uptime. Allows you to further empower a strong ramp up and will have very strong uptime. Patch 8.1 fixes the issue with bugged Mastery procs thus making this trait more competitive.
  • Concentrated Mending — HoT that accelerates over the duration, offering solid healing.
  • Blessed Portents — Mimicking the Highfather's effect from Antorus, this trait offers powerful progression healing in a form that is often life-saving. Loses value as encounters move into farm content where players are less likely to drop low enough to trigger it.
  • Blood Siphon — Offering flat increase to Leech and Mastery
  • Overwhelming Power — Good increase to haste that decays over time.
  • On My Way — Consistent stat increase.
  • Woundbinder — Haste proc for a Haste-hungry spec. Some concern over uptime as this trait only gets stronger as targets more frequently drop lower.
  • Ephemeral Recovery — Patch 8.1 changes this trait to be a flat mana regen whenever you drop below a certain mana threshold. High potential if you are able to bounce back from that point and get a 2nd proc from the trait which will be difficult to do on fast encounters. Situational usage.
  • Earthlink — Decent primary stat increase though decay and variance can be an issue for a spec that thrives on ramping for specific damage effects.
  • Savior — Solid potential for increasing healing on low health targets. Uptime can be a concern early on in an expansion where there is considerably less burst damage effects.
  • Bracing Chill — Trait with solid potential but requires you to almost chase the effect to continue the heal effect.
Ring 3 - Inner Ring
  • Resounding Protection — Consistent and strong effective health increase.
  • Impassive Visage — Reliable heal effect whenever damage is taken with a small internal cooldown. Higher overall HPS than the trait above but shielding often has higher value due to surviving certain deadly mechanics.
  • Sanctum — Powerful absorb on a low cooldown with Fade, only absorbs magic damage.
  • Vampiric Speed — Situationally valuable, mainly in Mythic+.
  • Gemhide — Especially powerful against physical AoE damage with armor and avoidance increases.
  • Longstrider — Good mobility increase but lacks defensive value.
  • Twist Magic — Very high potential when offensively Purging buffs from enemies.

Discipline Priest Azerite Power Overview

Helms, Shoulders, and Chests are able to interact with your Heart of Azeroth, granting you Azerite Powers. These powers can modify existing spells, provide buffs, deal damage or healing, as well as other effects.

The powers below are divided into three rings where they can be found in your Azerite gear:

  • Ring 0 contains Spec powers and is the first section available on each item and will likely be available to select as soon as you acquire a given piece of gear, contain traits based on your class specs. This ring is a new feature, found on Armor starting with Season 2, and requires only 15 levels on your Heart of Azeroth to be unlocked regardless of the gear.
  • Ring 1 contains Spec/Zone powers and is the first section available on each item and will likely be available to select as soon as you acquire a given piece of gear, contain traits based on your class specs and source of the trait.
  • Ring 2 contains Role powers, based on the roles your class can perform. It is only found on epic-level gear (340 or higher.) Lower-level gear will only have the other rings.
  • Ring 3 contains Defensive/Utility powers and is the last set of choices available in the piece.
  • Final Ring always contains Azerite Empowered, which increases the item level of the armor piece it is in by 5 item level. The effect, in turn, increases the power from all previous rings.

The first tier of Azerite Powers in an armor piece will have options for each of your specialization, plus a thematic option depending on the source of the armor.

There are other rings, those don't focus so much on your class and are more generic damage, healing, or utility improvements.

Role Enhancing Powers

These traits can be found in the Role Ring. The options are chosen from the varying pools shown below depending on what roles your class can perform: Tank, Healer and/or DPS. This set of powers will only appear on Azerite Armor that is item level 340 or above. The options available account for all roles that Priest can perform, not only Discipline options.

Generic Role Powers
  • Earthlink — Azerite energy courses through you, reaching a high primary stat value and then diminishing down to a lower value primary stat, cycling every 6 sec.
  • Blood Siphon — Increases your Mastery and your Leech.
  • Lifespeed — Increases your Haste and your Avoidance.
  • On My Way — Increases your Versatility and your Speed.
  • Unstable Flames — Your damaging abilities have a chance to grant critical strike rating for 5 sec. This effect stacks up to 5 times.
  • Heed My Call — Your damaging abilities have a chance to deal Nature damage to your target, and Nature damage to enemies within 3 yards of that target.
Priest Role Powers
  • Synergistic Growth — Casting your multi-target healing spell grants you Mastery for 10 sec. This cannot occur more than once every 30 sec.
  • Ephemeral Recovery — Casting a healing spell restores mana over 8 sec. Stacks up to 4 times.
  • Blessed Portents — Your healing spells have a chance to apply Blessed Portents for 20 sec. When the ally falls below 50% health, Blessed Portents is consumed and instantly restores health.
  • Bracing Chill — Your heals have a chance to apply Bracing Chill. Healing a target with Bracing Chill will heal and move Bracing Chill to a nearby ally (up to 6 times).
  • Concentrated Mending — Your healing effects have a chance to grant the target additional healing every 2 sec for 12 sec. This effect doubles every 2 sec.
  • Savior — Your heals on targets below 35% health have a chance to heal.
  • Woundbinder — Your healing effects have a chance to increase your Haste for 6 sec. Healing lower health targets will grant you more Haste.
  • Azerite Globules — Your damaging abilities have a chance to implant an Azerite Globule on your enemies. When an enemy collects 3 Azerite Globules, they explode, dealing damage to nearby enemies.
  • Gutripper — Your damaging abilities have a chance to deal Physical damage to the target. Gutripper occurs much more often against targets below 30% health.
  • Elemental Whirl — Your damaging abilities have a chance to grant you Elemental Whirl, increasing your Critical Strike, Haste, Mastery, or Versatility for 10 sec.
  • Overwhelming Power — Your damaging abilities have a chance to grant you 25 applications of Overwhelming Power. Each stack of Overwhelming Power grants Haste. An application of Overwhelming Power is removed every 1 sec or whenever you take damage.

Defensive Powers

These powers can be found in the Utility/Defensive Ring. The pool contains a number of Generic Defensive Traits, in addition to two class-specific Defensive Traits.

Generic Powers
  • Gemhide — When dealt damage greater than 10% of your maximum health, gain Avoidance and Armor for 10 sec.
  • Impassive Visage — When you take damage, heal. Cannot occur more than once every 6 sec.
  • Vampiric Speed — When an enemy you harmed dies, you heal and gain Speed for 6 sec.
  • Longstrider — Increases your movement speed by a fraction of your highest secondary rating.
  • Resounding Protection — Every 30 sec, gain an absorb shield for 30 sec.
  • Self Reliance — While no enemies are within 20 yds, you heal every 3 sec.
  • Azerite Fortification — When stunned, immobilized, or knocked back, you heal.
  • Bulwark of the Masses — When you are surrounded by 4 or more enemies, gain a shield that absorbs damage. Cannot occur more than once every 15 sec.
Priest Powers
  • Sanctum — When you cast Fade, you absorb Magic damage for 10 sec.
  • Twist Magic — When you successfully Dispel Magic, you heal yourself and 4 injured allies.

Season 2 Changes

With the start of Season 2 and the Battle for Dazar'alor, pieces that previously had four rings now have five. This new ring comes before the Ring 1 and offer two different spec traits for each specialization. Note that Items from Uldir weren't updated with this change.

Azerite Power Rotation Changes for Discipline Priest

While Azerite powers are not as impactful as Legendaries were in Legion, some still can change rotations substantially:

  • Weal and Woe will give you frequent buffs after using Penance either offensively or defensively. Helpful to track which buff that you have proc'd each time to take advantage of.
  • Depth of the Shadows increases healing from Shadow Mend off of DoT damage, can be helpful to track when the stacks near capped value.

Azerite Armor for Discipline Priest

Knowing the best Azerite Powers to look for, here is a list of a few Battle for Azeroth pieces with Discipline powers to look for. Note that you can have the same Power in multiple pieces and their effects will stack up to three times. The power listing here is based on all items having an equal item level. Remember that item level can often be a larger increase than a better set of traits.

Starting in Season 2, you are able to obtain six different spec traits in your Azerite Armor, with the addition of the new ring.

In many cases, it will be important for you to have a wide variety of pieces with those traits, as they can have different values depending on what content you are doing, like Raids, Mythic+ or PvP.

Recommended Azerite Pieces

The table below shows the ideal Azerite pieces for raids that you can get from raiding or from the Titan Residium Vendor. NOTE: This list prioritizes you having one Depth of the Shadows and one Enduring Luminescence. Stacking more of these is generally not preferred so the list below is intended to give you options to acquire both "one of" traits so that you can fill in the other spots with powerful generic raid traits.
