Raid & Azshara's Eternal Palace Guide

Holy Priest Raid Strengths

  • Strong sustained healing throughput.
  • Provides significant bonus mana to the healing team through Symbol of Hope.
  • Powerful raid cooldown in Divine Hymn which also buffs healing done to targets affected by 10%.
  • Flexible healing abilities, can assist in raid or spot healing at will.
  • Easy to learn and well-suited to fit into any raid team.

Holy Priest Raid Weaknesses

  • Little talent swapping.
  • Mediocre mobility and personal defensives.
  • Weak burst healing, is much more comfortable with consistent damage patterns.

Choosing Essences

Each boss section includes suggested Talents and Essences, but there is a lot of leeway in using them, which may cause you to deviate depending on your particular preference or group strategy. Please note the minimum rank in the toolip and refer to the Holy Priest Essence Guide for more information.

Majors
  • Life-Binder's Invocation — is often the go-to Major providing you with another hefty raid cooldown and strong minor effect that synergizes with Mastery: Echo of Light.
  • Memory of Lucid Dreams — Can be a competitive alternative if you need greater mana at your disposal or are just learning an encounter.
  • The Crucible of Flame — This is still a strong damage essence if you need to make certain enrage timers or need damage on a priority add.
Minors
  • Conflict and Strife — Very strong overall minor, flat versatility gain.
  • Memory of Lucid Dreams — If you are not using the Major essence, this can be an excellent minor essence if more mana is required for an encounter.
  • The Ever-Rising Tide — Overall solid minor essence if you are using a different major.
  • The Well of Existence — This continues to be a solid Minor essence for the spec, making it easy to turn additional overheal into productive throughput.
  • Unwavering Ward — the new essence in 8.3, at Rank 2 can see use IF the raid is almost completely stacked for the majority of the encounter and you need corruption resistance. It will see use at Rank 3 on more bursty encounters and if the majority of the raid can be stacked frequently throughout the encounter.

Wrathion, the Black Emperor Holy Priest Tips
  • Watch tanks when taking higher stacks of the boss' Searing Breath.
  • Prepare for damage about 5-6 seconds before Incineration's timer runs out and the debuffs are placed. With how much damage these seem to deal on Heroic/Mythic you can easily use Life-Binder's Invocation on one of these casts.
  • Sometimes Incineration goes out with Gale Blast, this is an ideal time to use Holy Word: Salvation or Divine Hymn.
  • Periodically the boss will cast Burning Cataclysm requiring the raid to run to safe zones. Help your allies by using Leap of Faith to bring them to you in the safe zones.
  • During the intermission the boss will cast Scales of Wrathion creating three zones for players to pick up so they can run through the Crackling Shard to end the intermission. If an immobile player picks one up, help them clear more Crackling Shard with Leap of Faith.
  • Mythic: The boss afflicts the raid with Creeping Madness heavily slowing the group if they move too much. This will require the team to stay spread making Unwavering Ward an undesirable Minor essence for ranged healers like Priests. Leap of Faith becomes even more important as allies are slowed down and need assistance to get into safe zones.

Maut Holy Priest Tips
  • Work to organize where players go with the Devour Magic debuff so that the pools they leave behind in Devoured Abyss can be easily accessed.
  • This fight is very favorable to Halo's cooldown and how easily you can position yourself in the middle of all of the players.
  • Position close to Devoured Abyss to avoid the Stygian Annihilation damage.
  • Make sure tanks or other mobile dps are grabbing the Forbidden Mana during the intermission so that they can get back into melee rapidly to give the healers mana, use Leap of Faith if necessary to accelerate their return.
  • Mythic: Watch for the Ancient Curse debuffs as the raid should quickly clear them by standing in the Devoured Abyss causing heavy raid damage. Short cooldowns should be used early to allow for them to return for the obsidian skin phase. Focus healing and externals on more bursty classes that will damage themselves even more during the Obsidian Skin phase. Try to position 30 yards away from the boss to avoid Black Wings.

  • Pace your mana on this encounter. There will be plenty of damage and the raid will be mostly stacked in two groups with ranged and melee. Watch who you are casting Prayer of Healing on and split your groups into ranged and melee piles to give you a better idea of where and when to use your Holy Words. Watch for Shred Psyche timer runs out, and the Psychic Outburst cast begins as that will be the start of very heavy incoming raid damge.
  • Utilize Shining Force to assist in knocking back Image of Absolution if you can see them.
  • This is especially important on Mythic difficulty, when you won't always have Druids able to see and therefore interact with the adds to stop them before they get near the group.

Dark Inquisitor Xanesh Holy Priest Tips
  • Stay close to the middle of the room to have an easier time dodging the Torment casts.
  • The boss will afflict players with Soul Flay dealing a moderate amount of damage. This, plus the boss' natural ticking damage will make uptime incredibly important, so work to reduce your movement.
  • Healers look to be the ideal candidates for participating in the Void Ritual as the Voidwoken debuff reduces damage dealt.
  • If you're planning on going into Mythic quickly, you will want to spend extra time on this boss to practice bumping the Void Orb's around the room efficiently as this boss will be a major wall for guilds that do not practice and perfect this mechanic. Note: if you are Voidwoken you will bounce the Void Orb in the direction you're facing. For example, if the orb is approaching you from the south, you stand in its path and face west, it will collide with you then immediately turn to the west, you don't need to "push" it along, just face where you want it to go and stand in its path.
  • Mythic: On mythic the encounter has few large moments of bursty damage if you move away from Soul Flay properly. Look to use your cooldowns on moments where you can not move far away from the Soul Flay because of the Void Ritual. Keep in mind when kicking the ball that it will move where you are facing and where it collides. Imagine its hitting your shoulder rather than your center of mass when aiming.

Vexiona Holy Priest Tips
  • Tanks will get clobbered by the Despair debuff. Make sure healers are dispelling the tank to reduce their stacks and incoming damage on the raid.
  • Prepare large-scale defensives for Vexiona's Heart of Darkness cast and move away when possible.
  • Watch for Desolation in P3 to stack players up and split the incoming damage. Mythic difficulty looks to have significantly higher incoming raid damage, more updates will be on the way for how to deal with that.
  • Mythic: On Mythic tanks take increasingly large amounts of damage and will need heavy support and externals in order to minimze the damage from Despair. Try to have some mobile ranged dps like hunters positioned further out from the group to be targeted by the No Escape from the Enforcer, stationary casters like priests should be positioned further in near the boss to avoid those grips. Set up a tank defensive list for despairs and make sure all healers are actively spamming the tank with Despair and set up a dispel order for the Annihilation dispelling at 5 stacks. We had a designated healer for dispelling first, second, and third with the 4th healer being a backup that would instantly dispel if they see stacks get above 7.

The Hivemind Holy Priest Tips
  • This fight is very helter-skelter and features consistent incoming damage onto the raid. Just like with Dark Inquisitor, reducing your movement so you can increase your uptime will be key.
  • Add extra damage to the empowered drone on this encounter via Holy Word: Chastise and Holy Fire when possible.
  • The Echoing Void cast deals the most damage to the group and overlap onto melee is very likely, look to prioritize healing melee players when preparing for this incoming damage.
  • When the boss spawns Spawn Acidic Aqir go to the edges of the room to better dodge the rolling banelings.
  • Mythic: On Mythic, work to time your cooldowns during the Hivemind swaps as they occur every 75 seconds. Try to stay close to the edges of the room to more easily dodge the banelings and reduce your own damage taken while improving your uptime.

Ra-den the Despoiled Holy Priest Tips
  • Orb spawns occur around every 45 seconds making it very easy to plan and time raid cooldowns. Since you have a plethora at your disposal, work with your team to find out how best to get a second Holy Word: Salvation cast off. Unleashed Void will cause a heal absorb to be placed on the raid requiring significant healing to diminish it.
  • The boss also constantly pulses the raid with Ruin damage making it important to time your Prayer of Healing uses to achieve the best value.
  • Mythic: On Mythic, each essence comes out every 60 seconds, taking an extra 10 seconds to kill the essence before it impacts the boss. Between your healer team you should make sure there is coverage for the incoming damage, especially for specific combos. Void and Vita detonating for example cause healing absorbs and burst damage respectively. Work to position yourself so that you will not be in the path of lightning fields and will not be the closest ally. In the final phase, look to delay your cooldowns to assist in the later stages where healing is most stressed. Communicate with other healers to ensure that you are constantly cycling cooldowns to sustain players. While a paladin's wings are running for example, look to support the debuffed players. While your cooldowns are running allow them to watch out for debuffed players. Finding a solid medium is challenging but can be figured out quickly.

Shad'har the Insatiable Holy Priest Tips
  • This fight requires constant movement, help players get away from the raid by using Leap of Faith to reposition them as needed.
  • Be ready to respond to Slurry Outburst damage as it will often hit a number of ranged players and other melee who have the debuff.
  • Tanks and allies with Debilitating Spit will need particular spothealing on this encounter.
  • Umbral Eruption will push players to keep moving in P1, in Phase 2 you will want to stack to heal through the Umbral Eruption.
  • Mythic: On Mythic, damage hits the raid with each fixate. Most 3 minutes will need to be used in Phase 2 and if there are combos of quick fixate detonations and orb soaks then multiple cooldowns can be paired together on this usual 5 healer encounter. Assist with Leap of Faith if you do not have enough Freedoms to immune players.

Drest'agath Holy Priest Tips
  • This fight will involve heavy spread and multi-dotting. Monks and Paladin healers should focus on healing melee in the tentacles which have a line of sight obfuscation while the Priest focuses on healing players outside of the tentacle zones.
  • Help kill eye-stalks so that the DPS can pick up Void Infused Ichor to be able to damage the boss without the boss healing.
  • Mythic: On Mythic, damage comes from Agony's that are based off of the tentacles, eyestalks and maws that are killed. Timing for incoming damage can be challenging when the raid is killing them at inconsistent times. Look to be mindful of the boss' energy to recognize when incoming damage wiill occur and communicate with your other healers when you are using your cooldowns to more easily call for when you are channeling.

Il'gynoth, Corruption Reborn Holy Priest Tips
  • High movement, dispels and adds are going to be all over this encounter.
  • The most difficult mechanic is the Cursed Blood on Mythic where you need to turn on friendly nameplates to properly judge the size of the fields around your allies and dispel when it reaches its minimum size. This can take a lot of practice but it is important to take your time and not rush, the lingering pulse damage is not too bad and it is way more important to take your time and clear them properly than to rush and mess it up.
  • Blood adds on this fight will melee leaving a Recurring Nightmare debuff on players. It stacks so it is important to look at when the add is dead before you dispel the damage and to make sure that they do not also have Cursed Blood on them as well.
  • Corruptor's Gaze is a very annoying mechanic that leaves silencing pools behind for the remainder of the encounter. Proper placement on these is imperative to your success so adjust your positioning accordingly to help out your team as you might have to make more than a full rotation around the boss if your damage isn't high enough.
  • Mythic: On Mythic, the no-dispel strat is increasingly popular. The Well of Existence in the Major is especially valuable for the heavy spot healing potential coupled with the requirement that no raid member can die. It requires heavy overhealing to continuously be replenishing the Well but it can be an excellent spot heal tool to quickly top off injured players and prevent wipes. Fears and knockbacks are very strong to keep the adds off of you and push them back into melee.

Carapace of N'Zoth Holy Priest Tips
  • Constant movement, multi-dotting and raid awareness is required on this encounter. There is constant "rot" damage on this fight so again, minimizing movement and increasing uptime to make the most out of your mana will be vital to successfully performing on this encounter.
  • Adjust your projected textures, shadows, or particle density settings so you can more easily see the Growth-Covered Tentacle that slam down in the raid.
  • During downtime, adding damage will be required during progress. Mycelial Cyst and Synthesis Growth all take some time to kill and assisting your raid in finishing them off will be very beneficial.
  • Mythic: On Mythic, movement is key. Minimizing movement so that you can achieve solid uptime is very important. In Phase one, look to maximize damage on the cysts from the tentacles while quickly topping players being targeted by the eye. In Phase two, look to run quickly to the cul-de-sac area near the end of the lane, plant your feet then prepare for the incoming damage bursts that the boss will release in the middle. In the final phase, look to make sure you can have a place to plant after running from the boss to quickly top off the players hurt by the boss' ground effect. When the entire raid is effected by insanity bombs that can be another strong area to hold holy words and use them to quickly top players but also before of aggro, saving Fade for the moment before the bombs detonate and adds spawn is a must.

N'Zoth, the Corruptor Holy Priest Tips
  • In Phase one, Psychus will be dragged around the room as the raid kills Exposed Synapse which cause Psychus to take additional damage. Only worry about attacking the current Exposed Synapse as the others will heal when that one dies. If Psychus takes too long to die he will begin channeling AoE damage on the raid, be prepared to buy your team some extra time if their damage is low.
  • Phase two half the raid will enter the Mindgate where you will encounter Deathwing and need to dodge his Flames of Insanity. Any players afflicted by this will need to be dispelled immediately.
  • Stay away from players with Paranoia, if you are affected by it, go stand by your partner as rapidly as possible.
  • Mindgrasp will drag players either towards the boss or onto the edges of the room. Watch where the tendrils are facing from the boss to select the best place to position yourself to avoid losing more sanity and taking more damage.
  • Mythic: On Mythic, movement and positioning are increasingly important. Paranoia goes on all players and while it is often quick to Leap of Faith, work to refrain from doing so unless it is first discussed in the raid first. Gripping players through others can drain significant Sanity but with the buffs to the neck it can be acceptable to take some additional sanity drain if that means you are better able to stabilize the group through the heavy damage by being able to plant your feet. When placing Evoke Anguish, look to be on the outer column so that you can more easily plant your feet to heal before hand and then move away from the pool. When the eyes spawn from the boss, keep in mind that they rotate slightly before firing the beam, so if they spawn directly on top of you, don't panic and allow them to pass. The secret phase involves contributing all the damage you can to push out of there rapidly.

Corrupted Gear

Corrupted items can be obtained from all content rather than only Ny'alotha, but play a big role in optimizing performance, as many of the effects can be very powerful at the cost of potentially debilitating side effects. Dealing with these effects can also play a major role in encounter strategy, so pay particular attention to your level of corruption and reference the boss tips listed above.

Top Effects

One of the top Corruption effects to prioritize is Ineffable Truth. More cooldown reduction is insanely helpful for Holy Priest in accelerating their throughput and reducing their heavier cooldowns.

Passive Effects
  • Siphoner — Increased Leech is always incredibly beneficial for healers, especially in progression and especially when encounters favor heavy "rot" ticking damage. Expect this to be a very high throughput increase.
  • Masterful — Mastery is often the best secondary for early progression healing and if you have heavy levels of it on your gear, you will get strong value from the secondary increase.
  • Severe — Holy already moves more towards Crit in the latter part of the expansion so increasing your secondaries naturally can also help your synergy with Strikethrough.
Proc Effects

The above corruption effects all passively increase the value of your secondaries. While these corruption effects all give procs of secondary stats. Most secondary stats aren't far from each other in value and most of the stat procs are quite good. If you can pair these secondary proc effects with stat amplification (crit/vers etc from all sources) then you can put together some strong synergistic corruption combinations.

  • Void Ritual — A weapon corrupted effect that can corrupt other pieces of gear. This corruption price will often be high but looks to be quite potent, especially if other allies share it as well.
  • Infinite Stars — While recently nerfed they are Infinite so nerfing infinity is still infinity. All the same, it is still incredibly good damage that can benefit your raid or M+ runs massively.
  • Ineffable Truth — This corruption effect is a weapon effect that can be applied to many different pieces. This effect could be exceedingly powerful for the spec if the damage is consistent enough to make constant use of low-cooldown Holy Words.
  • Deadly Momentum — Increased Crit strike proc.
  • Surging Vitality — Increased Versatility proc. Some potential of issue if there isn't sufficient damage to proc this.
  • Honed Mind — Increased Mastery proc.
Passive Effects
  • Versatile — Versatility is not a poor stat by any means and might be even more crucial if encounters require greater damage reduction in order to survive incoming hits. Value will be determined by the quantity of Versatility on the player's gear.
  • Glimpse of Clarity — Cooldown reduction for Holy seems very interesting since the only abilities we use with cooldowns we are heavily incentivized to reduce (Holy Words/Circle). This may be stronger than just the "moderate" rank that it falls in at the moment but needs more testing to truly gauge the value.[
Passive Effects
  • Avoidant — Avoidance seems incredibly situational but could have specific areas where it shines for surviving a particularly challenging boss encounter in raids or Mythic+.
  • Expedient — Haste is less than ideal for Holy Priests so if the player isn't having much Haste on their gear as is, they won't gain many secondaries from this effect.
  • Racing Pulse — Increased Haste proc again isn't ideal for the spec so this proc is on the low end of a priority.

Ny'alotha Corrupted Weapons

Many of the weapon drops in Ny'alotha, the Waking City come with predetermined corruptions, some of which are unique and may not roll randomly. Although there is not a wide arrange of options, it guarantees access to a few corruptions without relying on random rolls. Like all other corruptions, these can also be cleansed in order to return them to normal items.

  • Vorzz Yoq'al: always comes with Void Ritual - It looks to be the ideal weapon for the raw secondary stats that it can provide and relatively lower level of corruption. Both of these effects can also be placed on other weapons or items in or out of the raid so keep that in mind.
    +35 Corruption
  • Eyestalk of Il'gynoth: always comes with Ineffable Truth - which is pretty powerful as well, but can also be rolled on random pieces of gear.
    +50 Corruption

Raid Tools and Analyzing Your Performance

There are many ways to getting better at raiding, and while understanding the encounter and your specialization's role within it is one of the most important ones, being able to review your performance will help you better understand what is happening, what went right, and what went wrong.

Logging is a powerful tool which allows you to make a record of everything that happened during an encounter. WarcraftLogs uses that record to create analytical charts detailing the positioning, damage dealt and taken, who had which buffs and debuffs, even a full real-time replay of the entire encounter. Check out Wowhead's full WarcraftLogs Guide to see what the number one raiding resource can do for you.

WoWAnalyzer is more personal. It uses the same WarcraftLogs report to create a detailed analysis of a single player's performance, with less emphasis on what happened during the encounter and more tailored to improving that specific player's rotation, cooldown use, survivability, and role (tanking, healing, damage dealing). Give Wowhead's WoWAnalyzer Guide a read, and find out how it can help you improve.

Raidbots is a simulation site, which allows you to simulate your character under a variety of conditions, create stat weights, compare gear choices, talents, and much more. It is a web interface for SimulationCraft, a long-running simulation project maintained by prominent community theorycrafters, made even more accessible through the simplicity of Raidbots format and dedicated servers. See Wowhead's detailed Raidbots Guide to learn more.

Deadly Boss Mods and BigWigs are all-important encounter addons, with customizable alerts, countdowns, and timers to help you preempt and react to important encounter mechanics. Find out more with Wowhead's Deadly Boss Mods and BigWigs guides.

Additionally, there are many Addons, WeakAuras, and other tools which can help you improve your gameplay, focus on important encounter mechanics, or just simplify your UI to make it easier to see what's happening during an encounter. Check out our UI and WeakAuras pages for more information.
